Susan Kavchok – Chief Executive Officer

Susan oversees the management of Childspace centers and is the company’s main contact with agencies and grantmaking organizations.  She has held many positions within Childspace since joining it as an assistant classroom teacher in 1988.  These include Head Teacher, Staffing Coordinator, Financial and Operations Director.  Susan is grateful to know the business from many different angles and, yes, still looks for opportunities to spend a few minutes in the classroom with the wonderful children who attend the centers.  Like many Childspace staff, Susan is involved in advocating for quality care & quality jobs in the childcare field.   She provides business technical assistance and peer mentoring to childcare programs looking to strengthen their business practices to financially support increased quality standards.  Susan’s Business Management degree has helped guide her in the development of the adapted statewide Cost of Care training curriculum, including conducting over 500 business trainings to childcare programs across the State of Pennsylvania and is a certified Affiliate PQAS instructor.

Nancy Denker – Bookkeeper

Nancy joined Childspace in 2017.  She keeps things flowing through processing tuition and contract payments, payroll, and expenses.  Contact Nancy if you have any questions regarding your childcare account.  Nancy has a BA in computer science, with business management coursework.  She worked in banking and, for the past nine years, in the nonprofit financial sector.

Teresa Mansell – Director

Teresa Mansell

Teresa is a founding mother of Childspace.  As “West’s” director, she manages all aspects of the center’s work including supervising and mentoring staff in providing children with high quality care; keeping lines of communication open with center families, conducting tours, enrolling families and interfacing with outside social service agencies.  Beyond the center, Teresa provides technical assistance and peer mentoring to childcare programs seeking to increase their quality standards.  Teresa is very active in the cooperative community, she speaks and mentor’s groups who are interested in converting to a worker cooperative structure.  A respected advocate for quality care-quality jobs in childcare, she was asked to serve on the Mayor’s “A Running Start” Committee, which is tasked with expanding high quality child care programs in low income communities.  Her current passion is piloting West’s Positive Parenting Program (3Ps.) Teresa holds a BA in Elementary Education and is a PQAS certified instructor.

Anyea Sanders – Center Administrator

Anyea wears many hats at the Childspace West Center.  Most of her work is around processing center paperwork, data management duties and supporting the West director in administration duties, and, she is West’s “go to” person for teaching staff coverage. .  Anyea has been providing child care for ten years and joined Childspace West in 2010.  She holds a Child Development Associate Certification and is pursuing a degree in Childcare Management through the T.E.A.C.H program.  Her goal is to be a Childspace Director once she completes her degree.  She is currently being mentored toward this role by Teresa.   If Teresa is out, Anyea is there to address your questions.

Childspace Too (Germantown) Center

Mindy Barbakoff – Director

As “Childspace Too’s” director, Mindy manages all aspects of the center’s work including supervising and mentoring staff in providing children with high quality care; keeping lines of communication open with center families, conducting tours and enrolling families.  She also is the main contact on building and social service contracts and has created a system to help parents navigate the state and city offices involved in their children’s care.  Mindy is well-known for her quality care-quality job advocacy.  She sits on the statewide Pennsylvania Child Care Associate board (PACCA) and convenes the regional advocacy group: The Northwest Directors Group.  Mindy joined Childspace in 1993 as an experienced director.  She has a master’s degree in education, is a certified PQAS trainer and was a NAEYC certification accreditor.

Marilyn Edmonds – Social Worker (Supports families at all centers.)

Mt. Airy Childcare Center

Edie Appel – Director

Edie Appel

Edie oversees all aspects of Childspace’s largest center, Mt Airy.  Still, she is always ready to roll up her sleeves and offer a family a tour, enroll a child or answer a question about bed time routines or how worms help plants grow.  Edie also facilitates Mt Airy’s Parent Advisory Committee and is leading the Positive Parenting Introduction series at all three Childspace centers helping parents acquire skills for dealing with the inevitable challenges of parenting in a positive and effective manner.   Edie has been a director for over 25 years and has been at Childspace since 1999. She holds a BA Degree in Psychology and 30 Special Education Graduate credits.

OPEN – Assistant Director & Childspace Advocacy Coordinator

This position supports Mt Airy’s director in supervising and mentoring teaching staff; conducting tours and enrolling families and, most importantly, works with classroom teams on honing curriculum activities to meet the learning style of the children in each classroom.  This position also keeps the wheels of the advocacy effort turning smoothly through documenting coalition work, participating as an advocate and coordinating trainings for other directors and direct line staff.

Sheree Tucker – Mt Airy Staffing Coordinator & Parent Liaison”

Sheree Tucker

As our Staffing Coordinator, Sheree ensures that each classroom has the number of teachers it needs for the number of students attending that day.  Sheree is also the Young Toddler’s Lead Teacher.  A staff member since 1991, she has the honor of now teaching the children of some of her earliest students. Sheree has been an early childhood educator for over 30 years; she holds a Child Development Associate Certification and is pursuing an Early Childhood Education degree.

Cass Cummings – Administrative Assistant

Cass provides administrative support to the Director and Assistant Director.  She strives to get parents’ queries and questions to the right person; you’ll find her on the third floor!  Cass joined Childspace in 2004 and enjoys the variety in her work, including bringing her creative clip art skills for classroom announcements and parent communications!
